In His Grip

Description

The latest book from the Verwer Hession Trust

George Verwer was the founder and International Director of Operation Mobilisation, one of the world’s largest Christian mission agencies. OM’s land-based teams partner with local churches and serve in over 147 countries. The OM ships, ‘Logos Hope’ and ‘Doulos Hope’, bring educational books, practical aid, and gospel outreach around the world.

In His Grip tells the story of the formative years in George’s life, and of the development, in the decades following, of his thinking about Christian discipleship and world mission. George was remarkable in combining two passions, the Great Commission (Matthew 28.18-20) and the Great Commandment (John 13.34-35). For George it was noteither / or. Both Commandment and Commission inspired him, and he inspired these in others.

George didn’t hold on to people, even those with leadership qualities: he had the gift of releasing people into other ministries. He blessed those who left OM, encouraging them to pursue the vision God had given them, often supporting them financially. George modelled the simple lifestyle. Though a powerful fundraiser, he and his family owned nothing. He was a leader who believed in ‘second chance people’, those who worked through failure to achieve something with their lives. A largeness of heart endeared George.

The biographical ‘Defining Moments’ is followed by excerpts from seven of George’s books, offering insight into his 68 years of worship and witness. Disappointment and pain were often part of those years, and he wrote about it:

“Life at times seems such a mess to me and I guess that’s why I teach ‘Messiology’ – that God in His mercy and mystery often does great things in the midst of the mess.”

George’s life and books have inspired us. We believe they can inspire you with the same vision, faith and perseverance. Read, enjoy, be challenged!
