Not I But Christ, Roy Hession – Book Review
In this powerful book Roy Hession explores the theme of kingship.
At the centre of the book is David, the great king of Israel. Other kings are studied too, like Saul and Solomon. The book asks the question: ‘Who is king of our hearts?’ The writer draws on the lives of these kings of the Old Testament to consider what happens when the wrong king is in charge, comparing Saul with the ‘old self’ that needs to give way to the rightful king, Jesus.
In one section he looks at how powerless Saul was to deal with Goliath; it was not until the anointed king came along, that the giant was defeated. In the same way, we need to get off the throne of our own lives for there to be any lasting victory.
Later in the book the author considers David’s generosity of spirit towards Mephibosheth. He was the son of Jonathan, in the royal line of Saul. He, though, was only too grateful to relinquish the throne to the anointed one of God. Similarly for us, there is great blessing in submitting to Jesus’ rightful reign.
For anyone interested in gaining a deeper appreciation of God’s Word, this is an exceptional book. The interweaving lives of the kings of Israel provide compelling illustrations of how God works now in our lives.
